Savory Sunday!

Today is my husbands 38th birthday and his grandpa Harry's 82nd birthday, so in honor of their big day I thought I would post their favorite food! We have a big extended family party every year to celebrate their birthday's and we have Dutch Oven Potatoes every time! I am so excited to eat them tonight!
Note, I have never made these myself, it is Travis and grandpa's specialty! (which works out very nicely for me)

Dutch Oven Potatoes

This serves about 5 people. They can be made over a fire, on the stove top, or in the oven. Cooking time just depends on the heat of where you cook them.

1 lb bacon, we prefer peppered bacon, but any flavor will do
1 lb sausage, we have found that Jimmy Dean is the best
2 - 3 large onions
10 potatoes (or 2 per person)
(could also use a bag of shredded or cubed hash browns)
salt
pepper
onion salt
garlic salt
(sometimes we add jalapenos also)

First: Cut the bacon into bite sized pieces and brown them in dutch oven. Season with the salt, pepper, onion salt and garlic salt to taste. Drain off the grease.

Second: Crumble the sausage and brown with the bacon. While sausage is cooking, cut onions into small pieces. Drain any excess grease.

Third: Add chopped onions to the bacon and sausage and cook onions until tender. (if adding jalapenos, add them now) While onions are cooking, slice potatoes with skins into about 1/8 inch thick slices.

Fourth: Add sliced potatoes to bacon, sausage and onion mixture and cook until potatoes are tender. Add more salt, pepper, onion salt and garlic salt to taste to the potatoes while they are cooking.

This is the delicious final product! It is a meal in itself! You may need to add more salt, pepper, onion salt and garlic salt to taste. Travis puts BBQ sauce on them, Travis' family puts ketchup on them and my family puts ranch on them! What will you put on them?

Whenever we make these potatoes we always make a little extra to have breakfast burritos the next morning. We warm tortillas, scramble some eggs and add cheese and the left over potatoes, it is the best breakfast ever! I have never been camping in my married life without these potatoes! It just does not seem right to not have them in the woods!
